With the PETRA IV project, DESY is launching one of the most ambitious and innovative large-scale research projects worldwide. PETRA IV, the most brilliant synchrotron radiation source of the next generation, will be the ultimate 4D X-ray microscope, setting new standards in precision and performance. To implement the project, we are looking for motivated employees who want to get involved in a complex project with international appeal. As part of our interdisciplinary Experiment Control Group, you will work on software used every day at worldclass photon sources such as PETRA III, FLASH, and the upcoming PETRA IV facility. About your role:

• Integrate scientific equipment, sensors, and hardware into the TANGO Controls ecosystem (Python/C++)
• Develop device abstractions and communication layers (RS232, TCP/IP, Modbus, GPIB)
• Implement modern datastreaming concepts (ZMQ, Redis Streams, inhouse technologies)
• Collect and translate requirements from scientists and engineers into robust software designs
• Apply modern software engineering practices (code reviews, Git workflows, testing)
• Contribute to active opensource and community driven projects

About you:

• Completed university studies in Computer Science, Physics, Electrical Engineering, or related fields or a comparable qualification
• Strong Python skills and familiarity with Pythonic development practices; Strong C++ background
• Experience with Git and collaborative development- Proven Experience with Tango Controls
• Knowledge of DevOps, CI/CD, or testdriven development is an asset
• Enjoy working in interdisciplinary and international teams
• Excellent written and spoken English skills
• Strong teamwork and communication skills

Promoting young researchers is a major priority for the Helmholtz Association. Its qualification schemes for young researchers are geared mainly towards PhD students, postdocs and young managers. The Helmholtz Association has set high standards for its talent management. Its strategy begins with targeted recruitment of highly qualified staff at all levels, followed by comprehensive support aimed at further developing their potential. Ensuring equal opportunities is an essential element in all talent management activities undertaken by the Helmholtz Association.

The Helmholtz Graduate Schools and Research Schools at almost all Helmholtz Centers provide doctoral students with the general and specific skills and training they need, as well as ample opportunity to network. The period following a doctorate is decisive in determining the direction and success of a scientific career. For this reason, we established Career Development Centers for postdoctoral researchers in the Helmholtz Centers. This equips young researchers with the skills they need to go on to head a Helmholtz Investigator Group , for example. As an Investigator Group leader, junior scientists can independently set up their own group to conduct research in their specialist field and acquire management skills.

Within its talent management strategy, the Helmholtz Association pays special attention to the increased recruitment of talented female scientists both from Germany and abroad.
