Group HR Marine Director
As a Group HR Marine Director at BSM , you will provide strategic direction and oversight for the recruitment, employment, training and development of seafarers across the Group. You will be responsible for setting and maintaining Group standards, policies and systems to ensure a strong safety culture, regulatory compliance, and operational excellence, while positioning BSM as an employer of choice in the maritime industry. Through close collaboration with internal and external stakeholders, you will drive performance, innovation, and continuous improvement to support sustainable business growth and high‑quality crewing outcomes.
Key Responsibilities
Develop, implement and maintain quality standards and employment conditions for seafarers with the objective to position BSM as an employer of choice for seafarers and to enhance the ability of BSM to attract and retain seafarers with the required competences, skills, culture, attitude, motivation, qualification and certification.
Promote BSM’s Crew Management services within the maritime industry to retain and grow business with existing clients and to attract additional business from new clients.
Identify, monitor, develop and maintain new and existing seafarer recruitment areas and resources with the objective to maintain and increase BSM’s ability to recruit seafarers of required standards and in sufficient numbers to meet the requirements of clients and any other stakeholders.
Cooperate with Directors and Managers of BSM’s Ship Management Centres, Crew Service Centres and Maritime Training Centres to develop, implement and maintain efficient and effective Group Policies and Procedures, processes and systems for the recruitment, employment, appraisal, training, qualification, certification and career development of seafarers.
Monitor and support the effective and efficient operation of BSM’s own Crew Service Centres and Maritime Training Centres and ensure that they are operating in compliance with defined quality standards. Ensure that all seafarers are recruited, employed and trained in strict accordance with the existing needs and requirements regardless of whether they are recruited, employed and trained by BSM entities or by external recruitment agencies, external training institutions or any other third parties used by BSM.
Drive the performance of CSC by ensuring CSC heads demonstrate accountability, maintain high energy levels, and respond proactively to the requirements of the SMCs.
Develop, implement and maintain Group Policies and Procedures, processes and systems to establish and maintain an effective safety culture supporting the prevention of losses caused by human error, misbehaviour, wrongdoing or misconduct.
Liaise and communicate with clients, unions, professional bodies and other stakeholders with the objective to develop and maintain open and trustful relationships and to identify and define methods to improve sustainable compliance with statutory and other stakeholders’ requirements concerning the recruitment, employment and training of seafarers.
Review the efficiency and effectiveness of standards, policies, processes and systems and ensure that these continue to meet current and future requirements of the market.
Provide analytical monthly, quarterly and yearly statistics and reports with regard to the employment of seafarers with the objective to identify areas of strengths, weaknesses and possible improvement of the efficiency of operations and to take corrective action if and when required.
Develop, submit and upon approval implement the department’s budget and oversee its accurate execution. Identify cost saving opportunities and propose corrective actions in case of deviations to ensure compliance with set targets.
Coach and motivate subordinates, through appropriate training, development, management of performance and career progression to ensure that staff have the appropriate knowledge, skills and support that will help them perform effectively and contribute to the achievement of the department’s short and long-term objectives.
Effectively develops BSM’s Crewing IT ecosystem, increasing productivity through AI and automation.
Qualifications & Experience
Bachelor degree or higher certificate in Maritime relevant field and/or
MSc in Human Resources, MBA or Class 1 Certificate of Competency
Hands-on work experience in maritime human resources
Hands-on experience and knowledge of maritime operations
Skills & Competencies
Strong knowledge of the vessels’ crew requirements and seafarers’ specifications
Knowledge of the maritime market dynamics both for demand-supply situation, and also for demographics of maritime labour-supplying countries
Exposure in the development of collective agreements and employment contracts
Extensive experience in recruitment, training and development methodologies
Very good knowledge of the compensation & benefits operation
Strong knowledge of the seafarers’ rights and the maritime labour law
Excellent people management skills
Advanced communication skills
Strong organisational abilities
