The CSSB Centre for Structural Systems Biology ( is dedicated to infection biology using structural and molecular biology methods and imaging techniques in conjunction with systems biology approaches. Our goal is to unravel the underlying mechanisms of important pathogenic processes to find better treatment options against bacterial, viral, and parasitic pathogens. For this, we use the globally unique research infrastructures on the DESY campus. CSSB is a joint initiative of nine research partners in northern Germany and opened in 2017. Our aim is to establish an internationally leading research center in the Hamburg metropolitan area.

About your role:

• Technical and scientific support for the research and development projects of the working group
• Maintenance of cell cultures: (mammalian cells & bacterial cultures)
• Protein expression and purification
• Support in the preparation of samples for CryoEM and the processing of acquired datasets
• Preparation of buffers, media and solutions
• Documentation of experiments and results

About you:

• Completed training as a Biological Laboratory Technician (BTA) or comparable qualification
• Experienced working in a BSL-2 laboratory is desirable
• Excellent technical knowledge and practical experience in molecular biology, bacterial and mammalian cell culture, protein purification, and use of databases for organizing samples and laboratory inventories
• Very good written and spoken English language skills
• Interest in structural biology (CryoEM) and willingness to further develop complex methods according to the specific requirements of the working group
• Independent handling of complex scientific equipment and methods
• Service provision for molecular biology techniques
• High degree of self-organization, sense of responsibility, and reliability
• Ability to quickly integrate into a diverse and multicultural team

Promoting young researchers is a major priority for the Helmholtz Association. Its qualification schemes for young researchers are geared mainly towards PhD students, postdocs and young managers. Its strategy begins with targeted recruitment of highly qualified staff at all levels, followed by comprehensive support aimed at further developing their potential. Ensuring equal opportunities is an essential element in all talent management activities undertaken by the Helmholtz Association.

The Helmholtz Graduate Schools and Research Schools at almost all Helmholtz Centers provide doctoral students with the general and specific skills and training they need, as well as ample opportunity to network. The period following a doctorate is decisive in determining the direction and success of a scientific career. For this reason, we established Career Development Centers for postdoctoral researchers in the Helmholtz Centers. This equips young researchers with the skills they need to go on to head a Helmholtz Investigator Group , for example. As an Investigator Group leader, junior scientists can independently set up their own group to conduct research in their specialist field and acquire management skills.
